European Youngster Cup U25
Tobias Meyer wins EYCup 1.45 qualifier with Burgherrin

Su, 27.07.08

By winning the 1.45 qualifier for the EYCup with Burgherrin, Tobias Meyer concluded what was a brilliant series of performances at this year's Nördlingen international horse show. The highly talented rider was considered at Nördlingen as living proof that the concept of the Hindelang company to use the EY Cup series as a showcase for new talent on the jumping circuit, has paid off. Meyer is currently considered to be one of the most important up and coming riders on the international circuit and impressed at Nördlingen when, aside from winning the EYCup 1.45 qualifier, he won both the 1.40 and the 1.45 international class on Friday, the former with Lara de Safray and the latter with Lucrate D'eau Grenou. Both times, Meyer had ridden Selle Francais horses. On Saturday, in the 1.50 international class, only Marcus Ehning could beat him and Meyer rode Anabell to 2nd place.

In the 1.45 EYCup qualifier on Sunday, Meyer won before Evelyn WEICHSELGARTNER with Caloosa Hatchee (GER) and third-placed Felix HAßMANN with Claim Collin. A horse that was the absolute darling of the audiences, the gelding Rambo under Francois BRICHART (BEL) placed 5th. Disfigured through a nosebreak while a foal, Rambo made up for his looks not only by jumping the course with plenty of heart but also by charming the fans who came to pat him, causing plenty of cheers for the equine underdog when he placed so highly in the qualifier.
In
further news, there was plenty of reason to celebrate for Max Schmid, who received his German riding medal in gold on Saturday. Max is the son of the famous Bavarian breeder Eva Schmid. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Max and say: keep up the good work!

Oliver Berger and Lex Loxely win 1.40 EYCup Qualifier at Nördlingen

There was plenty of excitement in the jump-off of the 1.40 qualifier of the EY Youngster Cup at Nördlingen, the prize of the Kühlhaus Wörlitz GmbH. 9 horses had qualified for the jump-off over a course of 340 meters that had to be negotiated in 55 seconds or less. Only 8 riders competed after Michael Eichler had announced that he would not start in the jump-off. The challenging course included a tricky combination, and as an added difficulty a long gallop route to the vertical that followed. The first pair to enter the jump-off were Tobias Meyer (GER) and Burgherrin, who had one down. However, the second rider, Oliver Berger (GER) came, saw and won: not only did he deliver the first clear round with Lex Loxely, but the pair also set a time of 44.69 seconds that proved impossible to beat. Berger had been the favorite for 1st place prior to the start of the class but on his 2nd horse, the enormously scopey Quattro B son Quattro Latino. However, the big gelding proved too difficult to handle in the first round and the pair had not gone through to the jump-off based on a combination of time penalty and a jump down.

Hence, the favorite won in the end, but on a different horse. The next two riders to follow, Simone Blum (GER) with Sam and Felix Hassmann (GER) with Claim Collin failed to go clear. The next clear round came from Evelyn Weichselgartner (GER) with Caloosa Hatchee, but she was slower than Berger with 48.67 seconds. Bad luck for Angelina HERRÖDER and Baxter: the best German in the European Championships (5th place, individual) rode for full risk with a truly gutsy round, took a tight turn and found herself sliding into the oxer with her horse. There was plenty of reason to clap and cheers for the next rider, however, when Francois BRICHART (BEL) rode Icare de Lacombe to a clear round in the time of 46.13 seconds, which secured them 2nd place in the end.  The last rider in the jump-off, Stefanie Paul (GER) went clear with Leoni and placed 3rd overall with a time of 46.51 seconds.
